Self-care has been one of my priorities on my healing journey. The importance of it is
immeasurable. When I talk about this topic I sometimes get some comments like “I don’t have enough time to practice self-care” or “I think it is a selfish thin to do”. I empathise. I know it isn’t an easy thing. In order to practice self-care we must find the time even if it is challenging. We need to make it a priority, same as sleeping or eating. It doesn’t have to be 1 hour everyday but it can be 10 minutes. We are caught up in this non-stop society. We spend our lives working, taking care of the family, running from one place to another. We do not realise how this lifestyle absorbs our energy and affects our well-being. We can pay in future years with health problems or mental illnesses. Our body is our temple. We have to take care of it. We have to give ourselves the time doing something good for us. It doesn’t have to look always like meditation or taking a bath but something that allow us to be alone with ourselves, doing something that fulfils our heart. It could be painting, reading a book, going for a walk without our phones, or anything else you fancy. If we don’t prioritise self-care we might not be able to carry on with the rest of responsibilities from our daily life. If we do not give this time to ourselves how are we gonna be able to give love to others?
How self-care can benefit you:
1. It improves your physical health: the relaxation you get from it can trigger the relaxation response, which can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health
2. It affects your emotional health: taking time out to care for yourself can remind you and others that you and your needs are important, too.
3. It gives you a break from stress: as previously mentioned, it triggers the relaxation response and allows you to come back to the reality of your life feeling refreshed and relaxed.
4. It allows you to have time alone: when you enjoy time by youself it is easier to connect with your inner world and find a meditative state of mind.
I have made a PDF with different activities that will help your mind, body and spirit. I recommend printing it out and have it somewhere you can look at it everyday. I would advice you to choose 2 activities from each section every day. I hope you find it motivating and helpful. Click here to download.
